10th February 2008

The Brass Monkey Shoot hosted by Pilgrim Bowmen of Boston

Perfect weather conditions greeted all those who turned out for the Brass Monkey Shoot on Sunday 10th February. The round was an American with a shorter round for novice archers.

Any bad shots were down to pilot error as there was only a very slight breeze making sight adjustments negligible. To prove this, a perfect score was achieved by Neil Dowsett from Grantham Archers.

Judge Kelvin Oldham kept everyone in order and prizes were awarded by Mrs Radford who was Lady Paramount.

Congratulations should go to all archers who attended the shoot, the tournament organisor and field party for making it such an enjoyable and successful day.

County Clout hosted by Pilgrim Bowmen of Boston

It was a lovely afternoon, with sunshine and a light, southerly wind varying in strength to make it 'interesting'! Everyone had a good time and visitors commented that they would be back next year. The Wilkinson Sword was won by our very own Abi Clayton who achieved a county record and it is believed she was not far off a national record. Well done Abi!

7th September 2007

The first Friday in September heralded the final summer postal shoot for 2007 and the Bowmen were out in force. The weather was kind and we were greeted with a balmy evening, perfect, as all bad shots were now down to pilot error! That is until the light started to fail after the first two dozen arrows.

By the time we changed to the 30 metres distance the spot lights were on and the mozzies were out in force, I am sure they train with the Red Arrows. Althought we could see the targets it was impossible to sight using bubbles, however this year with the aid of lights we could at least see where our nocking points were. It was very comforting to hear a thud at the target to know that the arrow had at least hit. The event was rapidly turning into a barmy evening with Bill borrowing glasses so he could finish the scoring and Ian and Stuart having that dreaded complaint of trouble with piles.

Morale was kept up with the usual banter between members and refreshements were produced by a very able Judy. The field was finally cleared by 9.30. Thanks should go to all members for making it a very enjoyable evening.

Senior Inter-counties 49th Thoresby Trophy Shoot held at Wellingborough

This year five members of Pilgrim bowmen represented the county on a very gusty September day. Team manager Kay Petchell stretched herself across a shooting line of 23 targets, trying to keep spirits up and the Lincolnshire team put in a fair score considering the conditions.

The compound team, including our own Ian Clayton, came second behind Derbyshire.

The Recurve team, with a strong Pilgrim contingent of Gwen Mawer, Penny Bedford, Fiona Swepson and George Keeping, came third behind Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire.

The Longbow Team came fourth with Leicestershire taking the gold.

19th August 2007

Jack Oliver Memorial Shoot hosted by Pilgrim Bowmen of Boston

York/Hereford and Bristols

Our Lady President, Norma Oliver, opened the proceedings by welcoming archers from many local clubs, ranging from the beginners to the well-seasoned (you know who you are!).

Judge Kay Petchell blew the whistle at 10.30am for the start of the shooting and it would seem also the start of the rain, which didn't ease off for the first three dozen arrows. Throughout the day we saw very changeable weather meaning that archers became very adept at slipping in and out of various waterproof garments inbetween shooting details and there was a brief moment where archers were also slapping on the sun cream! However, the entire final distance was shot in yet more rain and many soggy bags of equipment were piled into cars, ready to be hung out in everyones kitchen that night. Wet hats off to the field crew who put all of the targets away in the rain.

Pilgrim Bowmen archers did well with Gwen Mawer and Penny Bedford taking first and second Ladies Recurve. Lorraine Swepson and Magdalena Dziubalak claimed second and third Ladies Compound and third place Gents Compound went to Ian Clayton.

Bill Bailey and George Gorton battled for second place in the Gents Compound Long National with Bill coming out on top by only six points. Two of our beginners, Judy Sampson and Tom Jellis also shot a National but at a shorter distance and completed their first competition in style. We hope to see you at many more tournaments in the future.

15th July 2007

Record Status York/Hereford and Bristols

Silver Spoon Bowmen hosted the event at The Gleeds Girl's School in Spalding. The weather was incredibly pleasant being realtively still and a comfortable layer of cloud protecting us from the July sunshine. It would seem that these are just the kind of conditions that Pilgrim archers enjoy, as no-one came away empty-handed.

Gwen Mawer scored 1041 to take gold in the ladies recurve discipline with Fiona Swepson taking silver with 966.

It is always good to see our juniors doing well and John excelled himself by getting a personal best of 1049 shooting a Bristol II. He wanted to make sure he definitely earned his 1000 rose award! The icing on the cake was beating the rest of the field to win the much coveted 'Pinhole Trophy' for getting an arrow nearest to the centre cross on his target at the longest distance. Congratulations John on having such a successful day.
